I am back in business..computer was down.

jmvp ,between your friends that want to go to Egypt and CaliNurse's friends...maybe they should get together !!!

CaliNurse ,I am on page 84 of the Costa Rica book I got on Thursday afternoon.
The pictures are great.
It is so pleasing to read about country that you love and have been to 3 times.

You also have to get this book.

OK Percy, I am going to get both the Fodors book wiht all the familiar screen names in it, and the book you recommended. You mean you are in the DK book??!!! You may have seen the post where I listed page numbers for some of the Fodorite references in the Fodors CR guide.
Jmvp, thanks for offer of help, but my heart belongs to Costa Rica!! I'll have to twist my travel companion friend's arm. I am soooo bummed out about postponing trip (health stuff, darn it!) trip to CR that i'd hoped to be doing a month from now. My kids went last December and loved it, want to return some day, and loved December weather there. I hope to follow in their footsteps before too long.
Faithie, what is it about you?? There's much sweetness and laughter in your posts--sometimes between the lines. Mais oui!!

I checked out the DK Costa Rica book at our local Chapters [bookstore]yesterday and was not greatly impressed. It does have some different photos but other than that nothing particularly new or insightful.

There certainly are a great many Coats Rica guidebooks available now! I have found the most recent version of the 'New Key to Costa Rica' to be quite useful and accurate.

Does anyone have other guidebooks they find especially different or helpful?

Jerry

I leave for the weekend and you guys go mad!

Perhaps we shouldn't all get together sometime--that would be one rowdy bunch of Fodorites!

Heavens no, Percy, you know I don't "do Texas" on the weekends!

I usually like guide books with a lot of pictures and to the point explantions about an area or about the pictures.

Since I usually know where I am staying in Costa Rica...I do not want to wade through and read about every little hotel and motel in a certain small town, and what their price is for a room and whether soap is included or not.!!!

But I also realize that those that drive from place to place to place, need to know more about what is available in the next town as they journey along.

That is why we purchase guide books to suit our own needs.

Because I feel I know Costa Rica quite well, no guide book is really going to teach me that much....however I never tire of seeing more pictures of Costa Rica.

I would like to say that was unimpressed with the 2006 Fodors book on Costa Rica, but I better not !!.......less I get deleted from this forum (LOL).

But I did enjoy all the comments made people I have met on this forum.!

CaliNurse:

No I am not in the DK book!!!~
But I sure enjoy all those pictures, many if which I can identify with!

Plus I find it easy browsing and not heavy reading.. But that's my preference !

Shillmac !!! What fun you missed , it was hilarious , but alas , all that's left are the odd remnants .... Which unfortunately look very odd as they stand alone without the posts which started them ! I have learned MUCH about The Fiesta Premier Resort in the last few days .....

Percy I agree about the books, I have so many CR books (not to mention about a dozen different DK books on Eur. countries) and the photos really make or break it for me. I'm easily visually stimulated

Faithie, I did see some of those late last week and read the comments. They were ridiculous! I surmised that over the weekend, most of them were pulled off the board. Didn't do Fiesta Premier any favors, did they? And I think it really IS a nice place to stay for AI enthusiasts--Percy liked it!

Tully, speaking of visually stimulated--the kitty on the soccer field was hilarious!

tully:

I'm like you I have quite a few of the DK books .
When I did England ,Scotland and Ireland and Wales last year..
those DK books with their colorful pictures were terrific.

For example,I knew what York was before I got there and what to see. Also in Cambridge and Oxford, I knew where to go right away and what I wanted to see.

I did a terrific walking tour on my own in Dublin Ireland and took the walking path tour right out of the DK book on Ireland.

There are many other example too numerous to mention.

When I went to Egypt last month,I made about 10 pages of notes out of the DK book on Egypt, and Xeroxed many pages.
But I read the book from cover to cover.

I knew this one on Costa Rica was in progress and that October 2005 was the month it was to be launched.

As soon as it arrived the bookstore called me.

I'm with you I like those books.

shillmac:

I just thought that maybe you went to Texas for some reason.

I think those Fiesta Premier posters perhaps did Fiesta a great injustice.

You stated on another posting that you know 2 Percy's .!!!

C'mon shillmac,you cannot be THAT lucky.(LOL)

faithie:

I am proud of the way you handled those attackers over the weekend.

And may I just add that the Fiesta Premier Resort is a lovely secluded place ,tucked away in an alcove, across the water from the Four Season and the Allegro Papagayo.

NO!!! this is not plug to visit the resort. It is my own comment based totally on my stay there.

hmmm... 2 Percys !!shillmac you are pulling my leg.

Actually, now that I think of it, there are 3! One is Costa Rican, the other a U.S. Representative. And, of course, the Canadian. Most are decent fellows! What did you think of the renewal of the Four Seasons thread? Sure do love a good controversy!

shillmac:

Yes I read that Four Season's renewal thread.

I did not dare to add anything else !!

Don't know what the conflict is over a top quality hotel.

I think I will leave it at that !

Yeah, well, I opened my big mouth again. Greenfieldhunter sounds like a very reasonable fellow. He has been an excellent contributor on this board, so I couldn't stay quiet!

Thanks for the kind word Shillmac-

Reasonable might not have been my wife's first descriptive word if prompted on my personality.

In fact- I have found this board really lacking without YOUR presence and voice of reason.

I think I read that you are a teacher and I can imagine you kindly reining in a rowdy classroom without raising your voice. You too Percy- you had been the person who originally laid the tired thread to rest and I thank you. Perhaps someday our paths will cross.

I should have let sleeping dogs lie with that old FS thread- I was not even a poster in the original and by responding I only added fuel to the fire. The funny thing is- I like staying in nice hotels too.

I guess NYJ responded and the thread was pulled- good- it was too divisive and might have been resurrected quarterly.

Pura Vida guys- enjoy the fall colors if they are still around in your neck of the woods.

Hi greenfieldhunter:

Fall colors have all gone around here.

That white stuff (snow) came a little and then quickly went. So outside right now the grass is green.

Enjoyed your comments in the new Fodors Book.

The pleasure would be all mine if our paths ever cross.

Thank you for your valueable input on this Forum.

Have a nice day .

Well, it's everyone's dos colones that makes this a fun and interesting forum. All of the different perspective are invaluable, but there's no place for name-calling! Goodness! I'd never heard that expression before! Glad it was removed.

No snow here in Oklahoma yet! But finally got below the 80's--I was beginning to wonder if fall would ever arrive and glad for each pretty day we were granted extra!

But thanks, greenfieldhunter. I'll have my hands full trying to live up to that nice classroom teacher image! Thanks for reminding me of how it SHOULD look!

BostonGal:

Glad you got the book.
I am more than half way through.

This is the format that I used:
1. Read from the beginning to page 51

2. Then Pages 196 to 199 inclusive

3.Then Pages 220 to 223 inclusve

4.The Pages 238 to 271.

This gives you the most general information about Costa Rica...even though you may know most of this alreay ...it is a nice refresher.!

I certainly am not telling you how to read a book(!!)but ...

I have about 8 of these DK books and this is the format that I found works best for me.

Then you can go to the "Costa Rica Area by Area" which starts on Page 50..or go to any area of your immediate interest.

Nice picture on page 52 isn't it.

Nice two -page picture on pages 64-65, right !

shillmac:

hmmmmmm.."finally got below 80", well just for that I am going to send you some frozen snow as soon as it gets here...it will come by Fedex!!!

Goodnight
Percy

Yes I saw on the National CBC news that you have snow.

I cannot believe what good weather we have here(in Alberta) so far atthis time of the year, unlike that in Winnipeg last week.

Your right..it is Costa Rica Time !
