New automated check-in at SJO

Brand new this week! You'll see a bank of kiosks on the opposite side of the departure hall from the counters where you pay the departure tax. They're like the automated check-in kiosks you see in U.S. airports. Right now it's an option if you're flying American, US Airways, Delta, or Avianca. The kiosk reads your passport and issues you your boarding pass. One of the people standing there collects the slip that shows you paid your airport tax.

You still have to go to a dedicated line at your airline counter to drop off your bags if you're checking them, but it does seem to speed things up quite a bit.

I noticed the regular Delta lines were still pretty horrific (as only lines in Costa Rica can be) but they're on the side of terminal across from the tax counters, away from the new check-in kiosks. Maybe no one there saw the new system.

You can still check in the old-fashioned way too.

Will Copa join in? How are they at SJO in general?

I asked this morning. The goal is to have all the airlines participate in the system eventually. For now, it's just those four. The system is brand new.

Copa does well at SJO. I try to use them whenever possible for my travel within Central America. I'm invested with American for all my FF miles, so I don't use Copa for travel to the U.S. But with an easy connection at PTY, you can take one of Copa's non-stop flights to 10 cities in the U.S. and two in Canada. It really is a good way to get to and from Costa Rica.
