Need help with family trip to Costa Rica

Our family (2 adults, 11 year old, 13 year old) is planning a 10 day trip to Costa Rica next March. We had hoped to spend a few days at Tortuga Lodge, then head to the Osa Peninsula (Bosque). We are trying to limit the number of travel days, as motion sickness is an issue with the kids. Unfortunately, Tortuga is full. Can anyone suggest an alternate destination for 3 days that does not require extensive travel days, and would not be too touristy?

I would try Arenal. Hot Springs, horseback riding, caves, canopy tours. I think you would have a great time there. Arenal Paraiso is a good place, Montana de Fuego, Tabacon...all good places that are easy to do day things from.

March is a long ways away. Call Tortuga (Costa Rica Expeditions) every once in a while to check for cancellations....or get on a waiting list. Tortuga Lodge and Tortaguerro are worth it. We took our two 14 year olds this August and we all were blown away.

Another possibility is that Costa Rica Expeditions is just offering a lot of packages then that include Tortuga Lodge and has blocked out a bunch of reservations. You may be able to book if you choose one of their other packages.

If still a no-go....Arenal is a good alternative, as Suzie2 suggested, and would be a good contrast to Osa.

Thanks for the suggestions -- it looks like Costa Rica Expeditions can accomodate us if we change the order of things around a bit.

We used CRE for many years to help us set up our trips. Quite often we did have to rearrange the order of our stays in the various places but they always made sure we got where we needed/wanted to go. Don't feel you need to sign up for one of their packages. We never ever did. All we did was tell them where we wanted to go and they took care of it. They are a high class outfit and if your choice of hotel is not available they will do their best to suggest something comparable. The tourist industry has really grown in CR so places do fill up sooner these days. As was suggested, have them put you on a waiting list. It is a long time till then.
Tortuguero is definitely a place to see. You get there early enough on the first day to be able to get out for most of the day and with one more day you should be able to see much that that area has to offer. Riding around in the boat is relaxing but we are more active and got a little tired of it. My husband, son, and friend went hiking over to the volcano one day with a guide. We saw a wonderful assortment of wildlife and it definitely is a place that people should put on their list to visit.
