Annie -- We just got back from Mexico, touring the Yucatan peninsula. One place you might want to look into is Rancho Encantado, located on Laguna Bacalar. It is a very comfortable resort consisting of twelve individual casitas, located on a lagoon with a lot of bird life, which you can see especially well if you take kayaks out on the lagoon. You can also tour many less-visited Mayan ruins from this location; we toured 3 in one day. Another daytrip you can take from here is to Lamanai, in Belize, where you can see howler and spider monkeys plus crocodiles and lots of other things. The wildlife we saw in Mexico did not begin to compare to Costa Rica, but if you are set on Mexico then I would consider Rancho Encantado.
