myan riveria animals

Does anyone know the name of the giant rat like animal that lives in the myan riveria.
We went to the Riu Yukatan a few years ago, and saw this hugh like rat. We forgot the name.

Are you sure it wasn't a male Spring Breaker?

I'm wondering if you are thinking of the Agouti animal. When we were there they were in all the flower beds and quite big. We were told they are part of the guinea pig family.

You might be thinking of a capybara (sp?).

Enjoyed both Poppa and swimmr's replys!
Might want to check this for more on the dreaded chupacabra--www.anomalynews.com/phorum/read.php?f=7&i=103&t=103

Edward was right--Agouti. Rodent with no tail, longer skinny legs than most rodents. Rather cute.

Capybarras are in South America.
