Most Unusual Food
 

What is the most unusual food anyone has tried while visiting Belize? Would you recommend I try it as well? What is one dish that I cannot leave without trying?

Everyone kept telling us about gibnut, but we never saw it on the menu anywhere. Chicken and rice is popular, and on the cayes, they have great fresh seafood - good lobster. Great fresh fruits like mangoes and good rum cakes. The food was excellent everywhere we went.

We love the ubiquitous cole slaw, beans with rice, and stew chicken made with ricado; we buy the slaw sauce, ricado, and Marie Sharp's hotsauce in bulk. We also enjoy lobster and coconut rice dishes and the tapado soup along the coast.

The most unusual thing I've eaten in Belize was a traditional Garifuna dish: banana dumplings in fish sauce. We had it prepared for us in August 2009 and I don't recommend you try it; it looked strangely like the "beige sauced fat lumps" I'd read about in a funny travel book just that morning. Sounds good. Can't wait for some fresh tropical fruit and seafood! I looked up gibnut and it appears to be a Belizean rodent. Has anyone else tried some gibnut?

No, we haven't tried gibnut, aka, the 'royal rat', since it was served to Queen Elizabeth when she visited....

We did see it on the menu at a roadside stand when we were in Placencia lats March. We were on our way to lunch to meet someone, so didn't stop. I regret not stopping just to try it.

In 20+ trips to Ambergris, I've never seen it offered, although that doesn't mean it isn't.

In Guatemala, our guide told us that they eat armadillo, and it's delicious. I'd stick with lobster. :)
