Monarch butterflies

Hello,

My husband and I will be visiting Mexico from Australia in January. We want to travel from Guanajuato to see the butterflies, and then continue on to Mexico City.
We're interested in staying at Rancho San Cayetano, which is in Zitacuaro.

Is it feasible to get from Guanajuato to the Rancho in one day?
Which of the butterfly access areas can we access from the Rancho?
What time of the day does one see the butterflies best?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of the different butterfly areas/tracks?
Should we stay one night or two in the area?
Any information or suggestions on this aspect of the trip would be appreciated!
Thank you

Some thoughts.
I'd stay 2 days. The trek to the butterflies can take the better part of a day.
You'll need to first take a bus to Morelia, then a local bus to Zitacuaro. Primera Plus goes to Morelia from Guanajuato, about 3.5-4 hours. You'll want the 7:50 am departure. Here's a link to another hotel's site that describes how to get to Zitacuaro from Morelia:

Local conditions for seeing the butterflies can vary, so it'd be best to consult with your lodging (once you decide) as to the best time/place to go.
