For all intents and purposes there are NO passenger trains operating in Mexico.

There are said to be plans for a Tourist Train somewhere in Yucatan but I have no details.

Yes, there are passenger trains in MEXICO, please check http://www.ferromex.com.mx/gfm2000.html and go to TURISMO REGIONAL

also make a search for trains, mexico, and/or copper canyon and you will see some messages about it.

I also found http://www.geocities.com/uriqueea/homepage.swf with a lot of information about copper canyon and good links.

Most people use the premium buses for long distance trips in Mexico. they are very plush, and the cost for the best are reasonable.

The trains are pretty dirty, slow, & unreliable, altho it is a good opportunity to mingle with the real people of Mexico. (I'm recalling a trip from Merida up to the coast, with stops at all the Mayan villages along the way.) The buses are so much better, fast, safe, on time, & also a chance to see the real people of Mexico.

Not sure what Zorro is talking about that there are no passenger trains operating in Mexico. They go just about everywhere, but are really slow. Bus is much faster. Most of the cars are 1950's vintage american and need so some. if you take one definateley go first class.

Agreeing with El Zorro, there are very few, and mostly short tourist routes like Cooper Canyon, trains remaining.

To ddp posting last... if they "go about everywhere" please DO share what you know (that everyone else doesn't!).

For Marty, how long ago was that trip you mention up the coast to Merida?
