Mexico-where to go?

We want to visit Mexico this summer for 4-5 and want some ideas about specific locations. We are 50-young fifty! Like to go, see and do-dont enjoy sitting on the beach or at the pool all day. We like upscale but not "posh" accomodations and like to eat and mingle with the locals. Help with suggested destinations- many thanx

Lotta options then. How about touring some of the ancient Mayan or Aztec cities?

One of the coolest options in this regard is the "Mayan Express" which is a train that departs out of Merida and takes you to Chichen-Itza, Uxmal, Campeche and more. They have trips as short as 3 days up to a full week. Info is on the web at: www.expresomaya.com

Driving the Yucatan on your own isn't hard though. If you're on a budget, you could just rent a car in Merida and drive yourself to the ruins. Admission to most Mayan sites is about $3-4. If you go this route, you could also consider staying in one of the restored haciendas. Some of these offer activities like horseback riding etc.

The Copper Canyon train is always a classic trip, though the best route is to start on the Los Mochis end.

A tour of the colonial silver cities and the independence trail stuff is always fascinating.

How about luxurious pampering at some of the country's top spas -- that would be the Cuernavaca area, which is also a great place to just hang out for a few days and splurge on great dining.

Speaking of great dining, I've heard that there's culinary classes in Puebla where they'll teach you to make a perfect mole and how to do handmade tortillas to perfection.

Mexico City, naturally, has a ton of things to do and is a natural spot if you're a sophisticated kind of traveler who appreciates fine arts, music, upscale dining, etc.

Yep...*LOTS* of options out there!

Buen viaje, amigo!

Mark has some great ideas. I love Mexico. I'm in my early 50's as well, and while I do enjoy the beach for a few days, I enjoy the interior of Mexico even more. We usually try to go for 2 weeks, so combine both. Are you saying you're going for 4 - 5 days? Mexico City is a great place to visit. Also the colonial silver cities. I don't think those places would be unbearably hot weather wise in the summer. I haven't been to the Copper Canyon yet - that's on my list of places to see - but tha tmight be an idea as well.

The Costa Alegre, south of PV, sounds like the place for you? Do a web search under La Manzanilla, Melaque, or Barra de Navidad.

For me Oaxaca is a wonderful destination. The right city size, nearby
(20 minutes) Monte Alban left me speechless, and they fave beautiful old colonial churches to see and buildings and museums . A lovely and lively plaza with cafes and restaurants and above all the feeling that it is not dangerous, ...here you can take a taxi in the street which is a good feeling.
There is also this feeling of being in a real part of Mexico.
To stay if you like a charming place
not posh, but very , very nice try Las
Buganvilias, a lovely bed and breakfast.Ask for one of the two upper floor rooms facing the garden with their own terraces. A bit more but worth it. Good luck.
