Mexico; wanna go but is it safe?

We have a trip to Mexico planned for October...now I am wondering if we are going to get stuck in a quagmire of trouble..news is not good. Has anyone been to the interior recently, and did they encounter any trouble?? I know the press tends to exagerate stuff, but there is still time to cancel.

It probably depends on where you are going. Do you have an itinerary that you can post?

Mexico is a huge country. Where specifically do you mean by "interior"?

That's like saying is the interior of the US safe. Where are you going. In 21 years & almost 40 trips to Mexico I have never felt in danger.

This is one of the places we had planned to visit, and need to decide soon. So : has anyone been to Oasaca in the past few weeks? this is my question: (see below qote from the 'travel advisory board'

August 24, 2006

This Public Announcement alerts U.S. citizens to ongoing demonstrations in Oaxaca City, Oaxaca, Mexico. Teachers, students, and other groups have engaged in increasingly violent demonstrations in and around Oaxaca City for several months. U.S. citizens traveling to Oaxaca City should consider carefully the risk of travel at this time due to the recent increase in violence there. This Public Announcement expires on September 24, 2006.

I should qualify what I meant by 'probably depends on where you are going'. I don't think I'd go to Oaxaca City right now. I would go to Mexico City, but I probably wouldn't stay where we usually stay (around the zocalo) because traffic would be terrible, and we might have trouble getting to our hotel. But I would have no qualms about visiting elsewhere in the interior. (In fact, we've already booked a trip to San Cristobal de las Casas and Palenque for next February - can't wait!)

Other than the tourists, things are quite sedate here in the geographic center of Mexico: El Pueblo Magico.
I too would avoid La Ciudad; Oaxaca; Acapulco and the border towns.
There was a disturbing article in Sunday's Dallas Morning News which you might want to read: www.dallasnews.com

It's too bad about the unrest in Oaxaca. As an alternative, you could consider San Miguel Allende or Merida. I think Merida is one of the hidden treasures of Mexico because it is sophisticated, yet untouristed.

Merida is hot and humid, neither of which I can tolerate, but it is sweet.
