Mexico's Copper Canyon
We would like to take a tour of Mexico's Copper Canyon and the railway ride. There are numerous travel companies offering these tours that it is most difficult to decide with whom to travel. Would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone that has done this trip and if the travel/tour company was good. Thank you.

We did the trip last April but not with a tour company. We drove from Puerto Vallarta to El Fuerte. Stayed at the Hotel El Fuerte (Phone 698) 893 0226 in Mexico. A fabulous hotel in a quaint town. They took us to the train and we rode the train to Creel (8 hours). We had to cancel a couple of nights in Divisidero on the way back because I had gotten sick. With the internet and guide books it is easy to make reservations on your own. You see a lot from the train. There are a lot of switchbacks and it was very interesting. You can get off the train at different towns to spend the night and get back on the next day. Try to buy your train tickets ahead of time.

We did this tour with a company out of Seattle "Alki Tours". They offer several train type trips, one in Northeast to see Fall Leaves and the Mexican Copper Canyon trip. They offer a lot of day trips in Seattle and other trips at reasonable rates. We had taken the Fall Leaf trip with this company in Oct of 2004 and were pleased, so we booked the Mexico's Copper Canyon with them as well.
There trips cater to an older group of senior citizens, but we found the group was usually pretty compatible, but not sure if you are much younger. The trip started in Tucson on bus, with one nite in Tucson seeing the sites along the way to border. We stayed and visited various towns in Mexico, where they choose places to eat and stay that were nice and cultural experiences as well. We took the local train thru the canyon and stayed in hotel at the rim. Alki does a nice job with good tour guides from the company and uses local guides to accompany on the trip. The trip was not high end or luxury type accomodations, but comfortable and very reasonably priced. They only offer one trip per year as I recall and it fills up pretty fast. - Granny Joan |
