Mexico on a budget

I am looking to spend a month long vacation in Mexico in September. Looking for something off the tourist track, casual, quiet, with a kitchen and a great beach. Needs to be very cheap but nice. Any suggestions on lodging and cities?
Thanks, Anne

Puerto Vallarta, but away from the tourist areas. There are several hotels in the local neighborhood that have kitchenettes and are in the $35-50US range. And cheaper rented by the month. (Oops reread your post and PV is not particularly "quiet" but very fun!)

Or maybe further up the coast to Bucerias, Punta Mita, Sayulita, San Pancho, etc.?

Another oops upon rereading your post. September is still the rainy season on the Pacific coast.

Can you travel a different month later in the fall or winter than September, for more certain good weather, at least along either coast?
