Guanacaste or Nicoya Peninsula

I'm trying to decide if I should visit the Guanacaste area (Playa Grande, Flamingo beach, Playa Hermosa) or the Nicoya Peninsula (Mal Pais, Santa Teresa). I will be driving from SJO to Arenal Volcano, then down to Samara, eventually make my way back to SJO.

Roads in general are not good in the Nicoya peninsula. I believe there are a few paved roads, but as you approach the good locations (Nosara, Montezuma, etc) they get unpaved.
