Mexico City Side Trip

Going to Mexico City the first week in March. Will try to see as much of the city as possible but would also be interested in a side trip(s). Guanajuato looks great, but it is also 5 hours away, and I cannot see spending that much time on the road on an already somewhat tight schedule. We certainly plan to see Theotihuacan, but are there any other places within a couple of hours or so which would be worth the trip or even an overnight stay? Everyone keeps mentioning Taxco and Cuernavaca but frankly has given me no good reason to visit either one other than that Cuernavaca has an ideal climate. And even Taxco seems like a 4 hour trip. I am wondering about Puebla, but also about Queretaro. Thanks in advance.

Go to Puebla. It is two hrs by 1st class bus ($17 one way) w/movies and snacks on the bus. Puebla is a lovely colonial town, nice walking tour will cover the high points in one day. See the baroque church covered in gold. Stroll thru the outdoor artists studio area and watch the artists paint. Nice outdoor market also, great pottery. Eat lunch at Los Ranas, the best tacos arabe in the world. The architecture is wonderful.. Cool train museum also. Very nice vibe in this town. I stayed several days and fell in love w/it.

Check out a wonderful article on Puebla "City of Angels" in December's issue of the Smithsonian Magazine on line at Smithsonian.com.

Nice article, Stewbear. Thanks for sharing that.

richnindy, do NOT miss Las Ranas for tacos arabe. Here is a post on how to get there. Click on the map link provided, make the map smaller, and then go there. You will thank me. I wish I was having lunch there today, it's a nice fantasy.
