Exchange rates are consistently competitive on ATM withdrawals, not just by my own personal experience but also judging by numerous comments on this point.
Also in case it didn't come across clearly, you definitely don't want to depend on being able to use your Amex, which is not widely accepted anywhere I've been in Mexico.

Sorry to top old threads but wanted to update Stewbear's restaurant recommendation of Cicero Centenorio, Republica de Cuba 79,
---we tried to find it when we were in the DF November 22, 2006, and the nearby hotels indicated it is not there. Perhaps the address stated is incorrect but there was no such restaurant on Republica de Cuba. We should've called but it was so close to our hotel we just walked--no luck.
