Mexico-bus v. car hire.
 

There is a wealth of information here about the advisability of hiring a car as against going by bus.
We are going from D.F. to Cuernavaca- Zihuatanejo- Taxco-D.F.I am coming down in favour of going by bus, my husband wants to hire a car. My concerns are safety and dealing with unwarranted stops by the polce on isolated roads and the traffic in D.F.This is particularly as I usually have to drive in cities because my husband is the better map reader, his view not mine!
We don't speak Spanish.
We are both 49, and have driven in most countries we have visited, but interestingly when we visited Puerto Vallarta some 10 years ago I remember thinking I was glad I wasn't driving there.
Probably the most hairaising place I drove was into the centre of Madrid and also from Dasheen in Soufriere St Lucia up to Rodney Bay in the dark.
We seem to have found out that we can do this journey by bus except for the leg from Zihuatenejo- Taxco.Is that possible?

I/we bus on a regular basis in Mexico and are always impressed by the bus system. Generally first class and above (Ejecutivo, De Lujo, GL, etc.) travel is excellent. A few weeks ago we bused Toluca- Taxco- Cuernavaca- Toluca with no problems at all. As far as Zihuat to Taxco I don't think you can do it direct, but one way or another there will be a way to do it, probably through Cuernavaca. As far as police/military checkpoints every once in a while you will run into one. It has never been a hassle on a bus. If you were in a hired car you would have to stop too. By the way- there are direct buses from D.F. airport right to Cuernavaca. Finally, busing will save you literally 100's of dollars over a car.

Dude do you know where I can access information to find out about a bus from Zihuatanejo? Even though we don't speak Spanish I can understand enough to read a website or timetable.
Another possibility would be a one way hire from Zi to Taxco. Is that likely to be possible . With thanks.

This is a really nice line- super deluxe which has service from Mex to Zihuat. Problem is, I think you will have to go from Zihuat back to Mexico City to get to Taxco. Most likely there is another option when you start checking at the bus station in Zihuat.

Hi Frances, I agree 100% with previous postings, take a BUS, they are impressive, UNO,GL and the like it depends where you are traveling make the trip very pleasant.
We looked in the internet first for UNO then bought the tickets buy phone from the US and sure enough they were waiting for us the day we were traveling.
Of course we had reserved the seats also. They simply request you should be there 30 minutes before departure. Often , like UNO in MExico city, they even have private VIP rooms in the terminals.

There is bus service to Taxco from Zihuatanejo through Acapulco. Take an Estrella de Oro bus from Zihua to ACA and another with the same company from ACA to Taxco - people do that all the time.

Driving in the state of Guerrero is something the uninitiated shouldn't do, IMO. Traffic in Mexico City's no different than traffic in Los Angeles, New York or Chicago - but the signs are in Spanish and that throws lots of people.

We have compromised. We will bus to Cuernavaca return and then hire a car from Cuernavaca to Zihuatanejo return.

Buses are great but driving is a snap and had a lot of advantages. You plan your own schedule, for one thing.

I have driven in Mexico for 30 years--from film production in Mexico City to the hinterlands of Yucatan.

Yes, I have had 3-4 "stops" which were spurious. Each was resolved easily. I always drive now but I was a big-time bus person before reaching the age of creakiness.
