mexican mail?
 

anyone mailed packages from mexico back to the states? i sometime buy too much - suitcase gets heavy.

Never trust anything of value or consequence to MexPost. Never. Packages in particular.

That said, there is a general, vague consensus among people here that outgoing mail tends to fare better than incoming mail.

If you must ship things back, go to a private service that will route your package through a courier, where you'll get tracking capabilities and in general just a whole lot more accountability in the event that something goes wrong. MexPost will not help you at all if something goes wrong, and you will not even be able to deal with them from the States.

Trust me on this. The Mexican postal system is one of the worst, if not THE worst, of public services in a country where public services can lag rather far behind what we are used to in the U.S. or in other bona fide first world countries. It's wholly unreliable even for regular domestic mail, to the point where everyone who lives here knows that they need to find out when their utilities bills are due and go to the appropriate offices and pay them in person because the bills will only very rarely if ever arrive. I believe in over 3 years of operation of our business here we've received less than 10 pieces of regular mail.

i have often mailed post cards and small gift packages out of the post office at Puerto Vallarta. they all arrived... eventually.

Leters and cards usually go through no problem. As far as mailing to and from Mexico I have had about 50% success rate. Never mail anything of value. For that use DHL.

We use Border Crossings (a commercial service that drives mail and packages to Laredo, TX) here in SMdA. Packages are very expensive - I have seen/heard quotes in the 100's of USDs to insure and ship to the US.

Postcards mailed from Mexico to the States arrive MONTHS later (if at all). Do not trust the Mexican postal system.

True story- my mom mailed us a postcard from Playa del Carmen, as we got it 6 MONTHS later!

It does take months but my postcards always arrive... eventually. I send a lot of postcards and go to Mexico fairly often.

I've already posted on this one advising packages are risky at best. I am surprised to hear about problems with letters and cards. I receive a mailing from Oaxaca every few months. It comes without fail and usually takes about 7 days.
