Mazatlan suggestions for first-time visitor

Hey,
I will be visiting Mazatlan for the first time in mid-January, staying at the El Cid-Marina. I was wondering if anyone could recommend any inexpensive, non-touristy restaurants (in other words: Where the locals go). Also, which beaches are swimmable, and are there decent snorkeling spots?

For what it’s worth, I’m not a seafood eater at all. I like beef, chicken, vegetables, pasta. Also, I’m traveling solo. I’ve been to Puerto Vallarta a bunch of times, Playa Del Carmen, Cancun and Cabo. Figured I’d try someplace I haven’t been this time.

We haven't been in the area for a number of years, but that area isn't exactly restaurant central. There was one charming beach restaurant about a 20 minute or so walk north of El Cid--I believe it's called La Fonda at Villas El Rancho. Still a lot of gringos but still very good for atmosphere.
