Mazatlan MX Airport

Hi,
We will have a five hour layer over next Sunday. (4:30 PM)
Is there anything close by to go and do/see, or does it make more sense to remain at the airport?

How early do you need to be back to check-in for your next flight?

Perhaps hire a taxi for a tour of town and a quick bite to eat somewhere?

Thanks.
Is the airport right near the town?
Are there things to "tour" if we do hire a taxi?
If it is just to go out and eat, are there ample restaurants at the airport?

I don't know, I have never been to Mazatlan. There are only a few posters here on Fodor's who are familiar with Mazatlan. For some reason it is much more difficult to find internet information about than places like Puerto Vallarta.

Hi cpeicott, I have been to Mazatlan a few times but for the life of me I cannot remember exactly how far the airport is from the old historical town miles wise. We always stayed at the Pueblo Bonita Resort which is about 30 minutes from the airport. So figure another 15 minutes to the historical center. So figure 45 minutes each way or a total of one and a half hours. With five hours assuming that you get out of the airport quickly and have to be back at the airport two hours before your flight you would have about one and a half hours to tour and eat. And if you got caught in traffic you could miss you plane. Hopefully there is a restaurant at the airport (I do not remember one but never looked for one). I would on arrival ask one of the airport people or a taxi person. I hope there is something fun for the time that you have. Best wishes.

I looked it up in a guidebook... the Mazatlan airport is 20 km (~12.5 miles) southeast of the city.

It sounds like there would be interesting things to see in "Old Mazatlan" like the main plaza, cathedral, theater, museums, lighthouse, etc.
