Mayan Riviera - car rental information
We are strongly considering a car rental for our week vacation. We are wondering about insurance? We are covered by our Visa and by our insurance company. Would you advise taking out extra insurance? If so, which ones? Any recommendations on company? Does anyone know the name of the car rental agency in the El Dorado Royal hotel? We are a bit concerned about safety and the check stops. We did drive all over Costa Rica without problems, so we aren't adverse to driving in these countries, just wondered if we should be concerned in this area. Thank you.

I've been trying to ferret out info on theis too. First, your U.S. insurance and/or credit card will not cover Mexico. I think the collision waver ranges from $10 per day and up. Additional is accident insurance. I can't find out whether this is all mandatory (sure changes the picture of your $100 base rate weekly rental). or if you can just take a chance. Evidently, the originalo car cost and injury payments can be charged to your cc, and you can't leave the country until you've paid all costs.
I would appreciate an expert's advice here!! |
We recently returned from a 2 week trip to the Yucatan. All advice was to get insurance. It is true your credit card insurance and/or car insurance will not cover you in Mexico. Yes, it does substanially change the price of your car rental. In fact, our car rental cost more than the house rental. Mexico is full of topes--even being extremely watchful did not spare me from hitting a few at too high a speed. We did have some damage to our car. The front bumper was pulled out and we were missing a small directional cover and a small part of the front decorative grill. Not one of the 4 of us has any idea how it happened and we were always together in the car. I do know we did not hit anything. Perhaps someone hit us while we were out of the car. With insurance and a 10% deductible, it only cost us $60 for the damage. Well worth it in my opinion.

But, which coverage did you buy/decline? How much did it add per day?

I don't have a clear answer to that other than to say we took it "all." We had a VW Jetta that came to $70 USD per day with taxes and insurance.
