Mayan Riviera/Cancun...Yawn

zzzzz...I can't believe there isn't a question on here regarding PDC, Cancun, etc. that hasn't already been asked 20 times.....zzzzz

sleeper Mar 15th, 2001 08:54 AM

I hear ya Mike. People: Do a text search before you ask the same questions which, more than likely, have already been asked before....numerous times. Thank you.

yawn Mar 15th, 2001 10:00 AM

Amen. Especially the ones like, "which all inclusive is...." yada yada yada. Search, please! There's lots of detailed information, trip reports and websites buried in the archives.

Tin Man Mar 15th, 2001 03:07 PM

Yes, Mike, I agree wholeheartly. But, then, if they did a search, that would call for a "brain!"

You cannot believe the bickering, fighting, etc., that happens on some other boards! This is (besides sometimes lame), very tame!

Guess some people figure, "Let others do it from me, it's easier that way!"

I agree with you -- 100%

zzzzzzzzz II

Debbie Mar 15th, 2001 05:58 PM

Tin Man - you are obviously refering to the absolute insanity that has become the norm on the mytravelboard2.com/playa!!!!
I had left the Fodors board for a while because I got tired of people complaining about a) getting sick b) the crime c) yada, yada, yada, yada but as one poster once pointed out that it's amazing how all the whiners and complainers seem to stop when the heavy travel season starts and people just want to hear the good things about the holiday destination they have chosen (and who can blame them) and/or pick up some extra info before they head south.

Well, I'm now back on this board for a while because I cannot believe the unbelievable number of posts saying "tell me about...." (especially annoying when people have specifically written long and detailed trip reports!) and the long winded whining about "well I got sick you know and I'm never going back to Mexico and I just want to make the rest of you miserable for having chosen to spend thousands on that choice of resort". Blah, blah, blah. I did laugh once though when someone actually posted a question asking who all had gotten sick at such and such a resort (I guess she was looking to write a paper on people overdoing it on the booze/sun/rich foods and then chalk it up to the water). Well I roared when one guy wrote in saying "well, I did catch a bit of a cold on the plane down"....bad enough we all have to listen to each other's sad tales of illness as we get older now I gotta read about it while I'm trying to find info on a resort and/or help answer someone's request for specific info!
Tin Man Mar 16th, 2001 03:34 AM

Debbie: You're absolutely on the mark! (Didn't think I made it that obviously as to "which board," but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out where the wine is and where the "whiners" are!

This board now has civility, and I look forward to questions and answers that will help fellow travelers, not "Where should I stay!" Or "Will my 3 year-old like the kiddie's program!"(Actually, my crystal ball is broken!)

Nunya Mar 16th, 2001 07:10 AM

You all need to get off your high horses!! If you have nothing better to do than complain about other people who might not know about searching I think you need to GET a LIFE!!

Sleeper Mar 16th, 2001 07:20 AM

Nunya: I think the primary intention of Mike's post was to let people know they can and should do a search first. Duh! Chill out.

iso Mar 16th, 2001 08:57 AM

Hey Tinman:

Ever think that maybe someone may have just happened upon this site and thought " Gee, maybe I'd be allowed to ask a question?" Maybe this person is unlike you and actually has other things to do than lurk here waiting for some poor unsuspecting fool to ask a question that bores you. If you don't like the questions that people ask, find another pastime. If I'm going too fast for you, I'm trying to tell you to GET A LIFE!!!

peace Mar 16th, 2001 09:59 AM

C'mon Iso, it takes just as long to pose a question and look for and read the responses, than it does to do a text search and read what comes up.

Jim K. Mar 16th, 2001 10:05 AM

Hey, I have a question...where is the "search" feature hidden? And how oh how can I search for a specific phrase? Or get general information on an idividual country? Oh wait! It's so friggin' obvious! How could I have been so dumb....it's all right at the TOP OF THE PAGE!

Seriously, this website has the most user-friendly search features I've ever seen on a website. Get off your dumb horses and figure something out for yourselves.

Debbie Mar 16th, 2001 06:45 PM

Hey Tinman - do you find it very surprising over the reaction to the Adventura Palace tradegy on this board compared to the 'you know which board I'm talking about'? What I'm surprised at is that in the low season (and when the kiddies are out of school) that post on this board would have gotten all sorts of nasty replies ranging from statements of never travelling to Mexico again to berating the posters for not being sympathetic enough.

I'm in the liability insurance underwriting thing and I well know that unfortunately, things are fixed after something has gone wrong. The hotel has had their wake up call to put some netting or something to prevent swimmers in the lagoon from being swept out to sea and it's truly unfortunate that these two young people lost their lives but I can't believe how people were arguing with each other about the situation on that 'other board'.

So to Nunya and Iso - all everybody is saying is to do a search or be specific about what you need...everyone will be glad to help out but there is no need to jump all over our asses...if we wanted that kind of attack, we'd go back to the mytravelboard.com/playa board!!!

Tin Man Mar 17th, 2001 08:19 AM

Debbie: Couldn't agree with you more. I was appalled by some of the insensitivity!

Sorry, Nunya and Iso...they must have come over from "the other board" (where they must take pleasure in shouting and yelling obsenities at other fellow travelers!) You have a point, I just happen to disagree with you! :)~

Also for Nunya and Iso: Speaking for myself, I do have a life! Successful! Happy! Fulfilled! Yes, it makes perfect sense to ask questions, but not the SAME question someone two postings ago asked, fellow Fordo travelers answered, etc. However, most of the innocuous questions could be answered merely by reading and/or scrolling down.

grits Mar 22nd, 2001 06:54 AM

A search can only take you so far..usually to a site promoted by tourism or hotels or, gasp, travel books. That info is no substitute for personal accounts and first hand information. Tin man, me thinks thou doth protest too much..

xxx Mar 22nd, 2001 07:19 AM

Grits: That's rubbish. Barely ever will you encounter some sort of advertisement. 99.9% of the information found in a thread / post are personal accounts. Obviously, you haven't been on this board very long.

jim Mar 22nd, 2001 07:50 AM

Grits, you are misunderstanding the "search" capability at the top of the page. This feature searches only the threads on the Latin America board. Suggesting that someone do a search does not mean that they should do a search on google, hotbot, excite, etc. and for internet-wide information. Yes, searching the internet as a whole will bring up more advertisements than personal accounts, but searching on this site will bring up only past threads FROM THIS BOARD with the keywords or country that you searched for.

Is that why people aren't using the feature? Click on "help" at the top of the page and you'll find exact instructions.

grits Mar 23rd, 2001 05:15 AM

I was talking about a general search, not about this specific site. However,FYI xxx check out "best ruins trip-mex city or yucatan" third response. If it reads like an ad...and it sounds like an ad..then...This is just one example. Oh, thanks to the two above computer geniuses who showed me the way, I was able to type in Mexico City in the search box to find the message. Thanks again.

ISO Mar 23rd, 2001 10:21 AM

Tinman:

Successful!! Happy!! Fulfilled!!
I'm very happy for you, but could it be that you have missed my point!? Well, maybe - so here it is for the last time. There are actually people who live on this planet that have things to do that are more FULFILLING than to expend their time trying to impress (or insult ) others on boards that exist to disseminate information from other people's experiences. What do you care if someone asks a question rather that performing another function? Has someone appointed you to monitor this board to assure that everyone abides by your unwritten rules? I think not!! Why don't you lighten up and let the world exist as it has in the past and will exist in the future - without your pompous input. Now, have a great day and don't fly too close to the sun.

Sleeper Mar 23rd, 2001 11:16 AM

Iso: Get over it already. I think Tinman and Mike and everyone else has proven the point. You're fighting an uphill battle.

Hey Mike, I bet you didn't expect your comment to get so many hits.
