"mate"-ing in Argentina

I have to share this funny typo with you guys.
When I was surfing the net for information about the Perito Moreno glacier, I came across a description of guides who will take you to the glacier and wait for you during the mini-trek. The article said that while they are waiting, the guides "drink, mate and sleep."
Ah, what a difference a single comma can make!

oops - I forgot to mention, for those of you who don't know, that "mate" is a strong, bitter tea that is popular in Patagonia (and throughout Argentina).

nitajan Feb 5th, 2006 12:01 PM

good one...mate has an accent, too, no? :)

travellerfromDC Feb 5th, 2006 12:55 PM

Yes, but I can't figure out how to inflections on my computer!

avrooster Feb 5th, 2006 01:32 PM

"Mate" (the drink) does NOT have an accent. "Maté" would be the past tense of "matar" (to kill).

Despite the niggly details about punctuation, the original post was pretty hysterical. Thanks for brightening up my day!

SharonG Feb 6th, 2006 06:01 AM

Very funny. I saw several good looking Argentinians in BA that I would be happy to "mate" with!!!

Jed Feb 6th, 2006 06:58 AM

We had mate de coca, a coca based drink for altitude sickness, in Peru.

You could have mate and then mate with your mate. ;;)

nospam Feb 6th, 2006 08:17 AM

Right, mate!

As an off-topic aside, I was informed by email that in order to authorize a third party to pick up my Olympic tickets, I had to FAKE a copy of my passport...this from a government agency!
:)

Hi, SharonG!

Did you try mate when you were in BA?

Do you know everybody sips from the same "bombilla" (a sort of metal straw)?

drdawggy Feb 7th, 2006 05:27 AM

Well, yeah, in Argentina everyone drinks from the same straw....but the mate is Yerba mate not Coca mate....and while everyone mates together...not everyone shares the same mate, in Argentina or Peru :)

avrooster Feb 7th, 2006 07:45 AM

He's back!!! And with "juego de palabras" included!!!!

saltshaker Feb 7th, 2006 09:42 AM

one must indeed look around the room before joining in on a round of mate. there are some days that you just know you don't want to be sharing a communal straw with the others present. that said, I like mate a lot and we drink it regularly around the house here.

SharonG Feb 7th, 2006 09:46 AM

No I didn't try mate when I was there. Too busy drinking the wonderful red wine and eating Havana cookies and chocolates!!!!

avrooster Feb 7th, 2006 10:12 AM

I thought you probably had not tried it. I hate it, including the communal straw part.
