Margarita Bound

I have started to make plans to visit the island of
Margarita in November. Any information that I can
get about the Island would be greatly appreciated.
If you have any information about the best airline
to use to get from Caracas to Margarita it would be
most helpful. Thank you.

My wife and I have spent seven winter vacations in Margarita since 1985 and have seen quite a few changes in the island. At the beginning we stayed in city of Porlamar at the Concorde Hotel (closed the last time we were there), then the Hilton and finally the Isla Bonita Hotel (a new and beautiful establishment) on the other side of island - with golf course. The reason for our shift in location is that, in our opinion, the city was growing so fast and with the large number of hotels and condos being constructed, the local infrastructure will need a lot of major upgrades to handle the influx. Other nice destinations are in the Playa El Aqua area and there are quite a number of nice beachfront restaurants. Getting around Margarita is not hard as there are taxis everywhere and fares are relativly inexpensive - last time we were there, in 1995, a return trip Isla Bonita - Porlamar was in the area of 2,500Bs ($10 - $12 US); however, since then, inflation probably has increased the overall price. There are good restaurants in Porlamar along the streets "Quatro de maio" and "Avendia Santiago" which are the main tourist streets where the shops are. If you are going to meet anyone in downtown Porlamar tell the taxi driver to go to the "Paris croissant" - a sidewalk cafe where all tourists will visit eventually. Good shopping on these streets but the same goods can be bought from local merchants on side streets within two or three blocks of the main streets.

Airlines - weellll be prepared. The local airline is Areopostal, return fare to Caracas was about $100 US. People we met from New York city told us their flight - no seats matched and the overhead bins were all different sizes.

We stayed at the Hotel Maria Luisa near the beach. It was fabulous, economical, and the location is great for the local zona rosa and seafood restaurants. When you go to the flamenco type restaurant, expect a free buffet on Sunday to allow you to be acquainted with the time shares available! We loved Merida, yes Merida in the mountains! Also, Caniaima, just out of Ciudad Bolviar is not to be missed as Angel Falls is the highest waterfall in the world. We chartered a private Cessna out of the airport at Ciudad Bolivar for less! Also check out the $40 per flight anywhere in Venezuela tickets sold by Avensa airlines. You must buy the tickets in USA before you go! Check with Avensa or your T/A. Fordors guide tipped ujs off to this great savings and we flew everwhere in Venezuela. Note: More beauty queens come from Venezuela than any other country in the world! Fact.
