Mardi Gras in PDC & Cozumel

I just realized I booked my trip to PDC during Carnivale week! I have heard that there is almost nothing going on in PDC for carnivale but that Cozumel has a huge parade. I can't seem to find more info about events in either PDC or Cozumel. I'm sure we could get the ferry over but worried that it could be full on the way back. Has anyone had experience with MArdi Gras in either of these places?

I've been on Cozumel a couple of times during carnival. It's terrific! It seems to be quite local - there are lots of children and families participating in the parades. They have a few parades, so it would be fun if you could make one of them. I honestly don't know if PDC has something similar - I suspect they don't.

Another place that has a terrific carnival is Merida. One year we were fortunately enough to be in Merida for part of the carnival and in Cozumel for the rest of it.

I REALLY want to go to Carnivale.....but if the only celebrations are on Cozumel....how can I be sure I can get back to PDC without getting stranded? Are the taxi drivers available at the ferry port on this type of "holiday" or do they all not work and go celebrate? We were in Aruba one year at Carnivale and the whole island just about shut down! - HELP!!

The ferry terminal is right in town in both places. You'd be able to get to the ferry easily if you were on Cozumel since you'd probably be right in town. However, as to how crowded it would be - sorry, no info on that.

One possibility - how about booking a cheap hotel for the night in Cozumel? That way you could participate in the carnival and take the ferry back the next morning? There's loads of little hotels in town.

Chris. There is a parade in Cozumel on Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday of Carnival week in Cozumel. Obviously the Tuesday parade is the largest. The parade route is right downtown and so is the ferry terminal so no problem getting stranded. You will just need to make sure you know the time of the last ferry back to PDC that night and make sure you are in line so that you make it onto the boat. Lots of people come across for the festivities.

FYI: Cozumel Carnival is very family oriented, not at all the kind of "adult" behavior seen at Mardi Gras in New Orleans or Rio.
