Malaria shot necessary for Costa Rica
We will be in Costa Rica in the Osa and Manuel Antonio in March. I am pretty sure I should get Hep A&B, but should we be taking something for Malaria?
Thanks |
It's just up to you really. I've been to both the Osa & MA twice and have not taken meds, most people I met there didn't either. But if it makes you feel better then I would.

Ask your doctor, but since malaria isn't really a problem there, I personally do not take malaria meds but I protect myself from bites by wearing long sleeves and pants in the rainforest and keeping deet in my backpack in case bugs are biting.

See the CDC
http://www2.ncid.cdc.gov/travel/yb/u...sNav=browseoyb Note you take pills not a shot for malaria, malarone is best usually. |
The CDC lists Chloroqine as the recommended malaria prophylatic medication for Costa Rica and though Malarone is another effective med, it is considered more useful in other areas of the world.
Have been to Costa Rica twice and have not taken malaria precautions - it seems to be personal choice, as with any medications, there can be side effects in certain individuals. |
