malaria meds in honduras

After researching I see where it's recommended to take malaria med's for Honduras. What do you think? Do you take them? I am planning on going to Copan, Ceiba, and the Bay Islands. Thanks

When CDC recommends them, I take them. Malaria, once contracted, can be a life-long plague and we've never experienced side effects with chloroquine. Lots of people choose not to and don't contract malaria, but there are those who don't wear seat belts either.

I took them for my trip to La Ceiba and the Bay Islands. I really didn't want to but it seemed foolish to take the chance. It know people who have contracted malaria and it can be a long lived problem.

I did get nightmares the night I took the pills (but only that night).

Thanks for both of your replies. Is chloroquine the best drug to take for Honduras? I have taken malaria drugs before but I really didn't care for the side effects. Of course a different drug may not effect me at all.
Now I have to see what my fellow travelers think about getting a Hep A shot and taking medication. I aleady have my shots and don't mind taking the meds.

Chloroquine is typically recommended since it's not an area that's developed resistance to it.

Isn't typhoid, oral or vaccination also reccomended for Honduras?

Here's the link to the CDC page for Honduras and typhoid is listed. We chose the oral vaccine as it lasts longer.

Thanks everyone for the information. I am up to date with my shots but my friends who are traveling with me are not.
One friend is a little resistant so I am not sure if this trip is going to happen. I hope it does!
