Malaria medication: necessary?

I'm going on a two week trip to CR at the end of the month and am doing most of the usual touristy kind of places: Manuel Antonio, the Tamarindo, Tortuguero, Monteverde etc. NOt doing anything too crazy or backwoodsy either. With that kind of touristy itinerary in mind, does anybody think it's necessary to get malaria meds? Anybody have any experience with this issue?

Many thanks

We returned from Costa Rica a few weeks ago after having spent time in Manaul Antonio/Quepos. We didn't take any malaria precautions, but I'm not sure that was a wise idea. There have been several reports of a 'new' strain north of MA in the Jaco area. When we go back, we'll probably take the time to go to the docs and get the pills.

Definately make an appointment with a travel doctor.

Even if Malaria is not indicated, you should still receive the Hepatitis A vaccine as a precaution.

It is better to spend a few extra dollars than to have to deal with the reoccurence of malaria for the rest of your life.

I'll throw in my two cents': I'm not using malarial meds, but will exercise extreme caution with mosquito protection, mostly because of dengue fever, which is spreading in the region. I think that both yellow and dengue fevers are a bigger risk than malaris. Note that malaria-carrying mosquitos bite more at dusk, but mosquitos that spread other types of disease have very different feeding patterns; many are most active during the day.

Whatever you decide about malarial prophylactics, please exercise caution. That said, I'm leaving tonight for CR, and expect to have a wonderful, healthy time!
