Macchu Pichu

Hi - I am leading a group of students to PEru in January 2007. Macchu Pichu is part of the itinerary. Is the railroad the only way to get there from Cuzco? According tothe map I see a dirt road going up to MAcchu Pichu. We will have 4 wheel drive vehicles. Does anyone know anything about such a road? Many thanks - George New York .

There's no road to Aguas Caliente, the town below Machu Picchu. There are roads up to MP from AC. However, to get to AC you have to take the train or hike the Inca trail.

Personally I would never drive in Peru. Particularly if you are leading students I would strongly recommend against it.

Thanks for your information about MP.

I am tryingto find a reliabletour operator to take us around instead of driving. The driving is a contingency plan right now. Please let me know if you can recommmend anyone.

Thanks again, George

When I went the Peru tour operator used was Lima Tours

I thought they were very good.

We were extremely happy with a local Cusco guide - here's his website and email info

http://www.cuscotoptravelperu.com/

David Choque email address:

[email protected]

He has an 8 seater mini van but rents larger vehicles when necessary.

Happy to answer any specific questions you may have.

It's easier to take the early train from Cuzco, and then a bus upto Macchu Pichu from the station.
