luggage to tortuguero

We do not go back to our hotel in San Jose so we must take all our luggage for our two week trip with us to Tortuguera. Does anyone know if they will allow you a carry on bag in addition to the 25lbs? Do you know if they will just allow you to pay an extra fee for 10 extra lbs?
Thank you for any advice you can give us.

Travel light! Travel light! I start my 3-4 week trips in CA with under 20 pounds including reading and Spanish study material. Here are links to several excellent pack light sites and to my own packing list:

How are you getting to Tortuguero? Are you flying on Sansa or NatureAir? We flew Sansa to the Osa, and in addition to my checked bag, I brought a purse and a small carry on bag. If you're flying, a lot depends upon how full the flight is. The girl in front of us in line had her check-in bag rejected because according to them "it was the heaviest" at only 19 pounds. The girl had to pitch a fit just to get her bag on the plane even though it was well within their guidelines. Our bags weighed more than hers, and they didn't bat an eye about them. I've heard of some people not getting their things on the plane and others just paying a fee for extra baggage because the plane had room. If you are able to travel light, many hotels in CR will send your laundry out for cleaning, so you may not need as much as you think you do. Good luck!

If flying Nature Air, they allowed 30# plus a 10# carry on. Hope this helps. It's possible they will allow you to pay an extra fee as well, but it might depend on number of passengers, etc.

If you have any connection (through an earlier stay?) with a hotel in San Jose, it is very likely they would help you out with storage. Have you considered that possibility and found that it just won't work out? Just curious as you didn't give much information and there might be some options available to you that you don't realize. . .

Good luck. With light packing, as suggested, you can certainly manage. One nice thing about CR, you can do laundry cheaply (usually) and don't have to worry much about dress code or variety.

Or are you going up there by boat with one of the lodges? If so, there's little room for a lot of bags, which is why they limit he luggage each passenger can carry.

Yes I am going by boat to torteguera. I have a 25lb bag and I thought I would bring large pocket book with jeans and a jacket. Do you think that will be a problem?

That sounds about right. We went by boat as well, and we each took one bag and a backpack. Have a great time--it's a nice area!

Hello jfkosu:

We also are going to Tortuguero by boat and were wondering about the luggage limit but now understand.

I also read that jeans were a poor choice of clothing as they take a long time to dry. You might want to check into that. Light cotton was advised.

I hope that you [and we] have a good trip there.

You can talk a 25lb. bag on the boat, anything that you can take on a plane overhead you can take, to tell you the truth, I saw lots of big bags and they didn't say anything, our TD was nice and said they were not going to weight them so don't worry, Buck

You can also take a tote on the boat but its hard to lug around so just take the big bag, its only hr and a half ride, so don't worry.
