Low-Key Kiddie Snorkeling Near Cancun
I would like to take my 8-year old snorkeling.
Could be Mujeres, Cozumel, or Mainland but want something fairly accessible without the Xel-Ha or Xcaret crowds.
If a simple hotel has a beach and reef, that would be cool. Many thnaks.

Try the Garrafon at Isla Mujeres. www.garrafon.com
You take the boat at embarcaderos and choose the package you want (all-included among others) very nice for snorkelling and resting.
Check the site as you can take a look at the prices
One day trip!

Poppa, Next door to the somewhat expensive Garrafon park on Isla is the Hotel Garrafon where snorkeling is available. Only a couple of dollars to get in, they have beach chairs, a small snack bar and some ok snorkeling. Every bit as good as the park next door. Across the street is a great little restaurant with awesome food that's really cheap. Jean

We just came back from the Vista del Mar hotel in Akumal, which has great snorkelling right on the beach in front of the hotel. The hotel itself is quiet, clean, and quite easonable. Just 1 1/2 miles down the road is Yakul Lagoon, an amazing private snorkelling area with none of the glitz and crowds of Xel-Ha. Go to locogringo.com for more info.

Ditto the recommendation above re: Hotel Garrafon - you'll be snorkelling the same reef (albeit a dead one) and the price is just a fraction of Garrafon Park. If you kid really likes snorkelling, you can do Garrafon another day.
If you have the time, try to get a day-trip from Isla Mujeres to Isla Contoy. There'd be lots of snorkelling, lunch on the beach at Contoy (a nature reserve) PLUS a boat ride - heaven for any 8 year-old!!!
