Los Cabos gas station scam

Los Cabos is a world class vacation destination. Los Cabos and it's people are beautiful. I have always been treated with a smile, fairly and with respect. There is one glaring exception. The gas station scam. It takes on many forms and has been reported on various forums since at least 2006. If you will be visiting Los Cabos and choose to drive please research this apparently common practice.

It's been going on a lot longer than 2006 and not only in Los Cabos.

Oh and welcome to Fodor's forums.

Maybe you can tell us more about the GOOD things you found on the Baja? Why you found it to be a world class vacation destination? We like to hear the good stuff too!

Go caught with the not clearing the pump 30 years ago when I rented a car in Puerto Vallarta. They start pumping without clearing the pump charging you for a previous purchase. Only worked once with me!

I got caught with the short changing scam at a station just north of Tulum - just once. Now it's a very deliberate transaction at every station so that there is no question about whether I gave the guy a 500 or a 50 peso note. It seems to happen mostly in the touristy areas though. I haven't had any issues in the smaller towns in Yucatan state or anywhere I have been in Veracruz.
