Looking for wildlife sanctuaries in CR
 

I would like to visit 1 or more wildlife sanctuaries where injured or abandoned animals are being treated or raised to be reintroduced back into their natural habitat.

If anyone has links or names to places they've been in CR I'd greatly appreciate it.

I'm sure someone will jump in with the name of the cat rehab place in Guancaste.....

Zoo Ave [bird zoo] in Alajuela does good work with birds and animals from various sources, as well as reintroducing creatures to the wild. It is also a very good Zoo.

I can't remember the name of that place in Guanacaste, but if I remember correctly, the animals there were not going to be reintroduced to the wild because they didn't think they could survive. Still, you get to see jaguars and a mountain lion up close, as well as some others.

I've heard about a sanctuary for sloths too, and I visited a bird sanctuary in Alejeula where some of the birds are reintroduced and some have to stay. It was Amigos de las Aves and the name of the estate where the birds are kept is Flora Mayo. That was a fun visit!

The place you want is called the:

Wildlife Sanctuary Rescue Reseve.

here is how you get there.

If you are driving from Liberia then it is along the Inter-American Highway between Bagaces and Canas...on the LEFT hand side of the road.

If you are coming from San Jose then of course it will be on your RIGHT hand side.

However, it may NOT be opened to the public.
I was lucky enough to have spent two hours here as my private guide/friend took me there.

But you can go there...it is about a block drive off the Highway.
Drive up to the place and say :

"Pretty please can I see the animals."

Almost every conceivable animal is Costa Rica was there when I visited.

Thanks for you replies. The Wildlife Sanctuary Rescue Reserve sounds just like what I'm looking for. I'll see if I can find out more about entrance.

The sloth rescue is in Cahuita on the Caribbean coast. There is a B&B there as well.

It is the Buttercup foundation. The name of the place is Aviarios del Caribe.

It is a lovely place to walk around and see many animals and birds.

Oh yes and like Jerry said.....visit Zoo Avenue also......allow yourself about 2 hours ( at least)

Thanks everyone! You all have given me some great tips and I can't wait. I know we won't be able to see everything we want to in the time we have, but this is going to be a great trip and there's always next time!

I also found a fairly new sanctuary in the Osa area so hopefully we'll get to check that out too. Can't remember the name right off but I'll be sure to post it later.

If it's this one: http://www.osawildlifesanctuary.org/ there were 2 cousins I met at Bosque del Cabo who went & just raved about it. Probably the same one.

They told us about one monkey who had been kept most of it's life on a leash as a pet :( and after they resued it, it went beserk after they took the leash off. They figured it was really the only thing it had ever known and viewed as a safety blanket of sorts, so they ended up putting the leash back on him and he was happy again.

Looks like we'll be having a very full schedule! Thanks for the links and Zoo Ave looks great.
tully - I think the Osa one I remember is Cana Blanca, but the one you posted sounds great too!
