I too first visited Tulum/Akumal/Isla Mujers by burro as a backpacker in the 70s and PV even before that. (Yikes, I'm old!) Yes, those places sadly have changed, but not as much as other places in the world. PV has become too built up for my taste, but Tulum (which was just ruins on the beach then) still feels surprisingly like an outpost. Playa del Carmen could be the most shocking change...darn, why didn't we buy some land?

As the Eagles sang, "Call someplace paradise, kiss it goodbye." Mexico just might be the exception - an hour away from many of its most touristed beaches you still can find seclusion.

How much are you willing to spend? I was actually pretty impressed with the Viceroy Riviera Maya. It isn't "secluded" in a Robinson Crusoe way, but the villas are very private, service is good, the property small, and beach palapas were readily available. It wasn't cheap, but it was the first place we have stayed in the Caribbean or Mexico that we felt approached the kind of privacy and personal service you'd see in an Asian beach resort.

I would suggest Playa del Carmen, its a cozy place, not too crowded, lot of things to do around. You can get some good ideas here as well: http://visitroo.com
