looking for a suburb in Rio
Can anyone tell me where the suburb of Sobreloya in Rio is ? Not sure if I have the right spelling. Is it downtown or close to the beach? I will be attending a language school there and am trying to get my bearings of where I will be.
Thanks,
Roula.

I have not heard of it. I guess it is near the center or one of the tourist areas. You should call them and ask for a map and info on where they are located. If you are a gringo and you wander into many of the residential neighbourhoods you will be hastled a lot. I have stayed in some poor neighourbourhoods (with Brazilian friends). I many neighbourhoods, you will probably be OK as long as you are very alert and confident. However, most tourists would be scared stupid if they walked into most of Rio's working class neighbourhoods. You should definately check this out by calling the language school. Unless it is in what is deemed a safe area I would seriously consider changing to a different school.

Also remember that the the centre is regarded as a dangerous place to be after dark. Most tourists do not strat away from Copacabana, Leblon or Ipanema in the evening (if they do at all). The only other area that is OK is down south of Leblon towards Barra.

I do not think that is a name of a city. What I think it is is that the school is on the second floor not the first. It is a sub-loja. The city has to be another name

Bobby
Hi Bobby,
The city is definitely Rio De Janeiro. I just do not know the suburb. Rio is very big and I am trying to work out whether I will be north , south, city, beach etc... You may be right about the floor thing. I might to have to go back to the school and get the address again.
Thanks anyway..Roula.

|
Overture found a language school with offices that I now know are on the second floor:
Bridge Linguatec, Rua de Ajuda 35, Sobreloja 201, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil
|
Just would like to translate for ROULA the above post into Aussie English:

Language bridge, Street of help, second floor, 201 . Rio De Janiero. In this case the Sobre Loja means a small shop on the second floor not a suburb of Rio.

This is probably one word in porteguese I will never forget: Sobreloja = mezzanine. Thanks for reapeating it so many times it is not imprinted on my brain for eternity. Lets do this again.
