Looking for a small, beautiful resort on Mexico's Caribbean coast

Can anyone recommend a nice little resort on Mexico's Caribbean coast? Looking for a beautiful beach, good food, and something in the $400 - $600/night range. A resort with private villas would be nice. We're looking for something low-key (not a big resort), but that welcomes families. Thanks!

Check out Maroma. I haven't stayed there but it is suppose to be very nice. It looks pretty pricy though and not sure about families.

I don't know of anything higher end that fits what you want (allowing kids) Shangri La has bungalos and is a smaller resort, but more of a 3 or 4 star. There are great penthouse condos in that range on Isla Mujeres that would be great for families (we are headed there over easter with our kids) The island is low key and family friendly. There may be even much smaller places that would work too. There is a new small palace resort if that's what you want. There is a great website for isla info www.islamujeres.info

Esencia looks lovely, but a bit out of our price range. Any other suggestions?

We are headed to Ceiba del Mar next weekend, so I will post to let you know how it is. I know they only allow children certain times of the year.

No worries about the no children policy as we won't be traveling with anyone younger than 16.

We are looking for the same thing, although we have kids 9 and 11. We just booked Azul Beach Resort in Puerto Morales.

Anyone been there?

Try Maya Jardin (3,4,or 5 bedroom) luxury villa with pool,AC,beach in soliman Bay or Playa Belleza (2 bedroom) in Tankah Bay, both accept children. You have the whole property to yourself.

www.karismavacations.com is offering a 10% discount to 4 of the Karisma Hotels.
-El Dorado Royale
-El Dorado Maroma
-El Dorado Seaside
-Azul Beach

I've only been to El Dorado Royale (on my honeymoon) but I loved it. If you book with Karisma Vacations, just use the discount code kv8516. I don't know when it expires though.

Just returned from Playa del Carmen. It's a great town with something for everyone. We stayed at a boutique hotel called Aventura Mexicana, which was a short walk to the beach. There are plenty of beachside resorts in the area, both in town and just outside. The town has a pedestrian-only street (Avenida Quintana) with 2 miles of shops, restaurants, and bars. It is not Americanized like Cancun, but has many Europeans, especially Italians, and South Americans. Can't wait to go back.
