Lodging, Tikal

We will spending a week in Belize (4 days in the Cayo District, 3 days at Ambergris Caye) and have some questions:

At Ambergris Caye, we are thinking about staying at Banana Beach, The Palms, or Caribbean Villas. Any suggestions?

We are also hoping to visit Tikal. Can this be done in a day trip? What is the best way to get there?
All three hotels are very nice. Caribbean Villas has the larger and more private beach of the three.

Day trips from San Pedro to Tikal start at US$280.00pp with return air, ground transfers, guided tours, lunch, entry fees, etc.

Thanks Katie for your prompt answers. I have one other follow-up question. Are there day trips to Tikal from the Cayo as well? And what are your thoughts about renting a car and driving there?

We rented a car and drove to San Ignacio. Spent 4 days in Cayo. From there you can do escorted day trips into Tikal. It was worth every cent. Driving in Belize was one of the highlights of my trip. Make sure you drive along Hummingbird Hwy.
Christian

Only one rental agency will allow you to cross the border into Guat with a vehicle, but the vehicle won't be insured. All the lodges in Cayo offer day trip to Tikal, book with one of them. Or you can depart Cayo, travel to Tikal, spend the night in the park or on the island village of Flores, and catch one of two flights daily from Flores back to Belize Intl at US$88.00pp for the 50 mins flight. You can time this with your departure from Belize bakc home.
