Lodging in Monteverde
 

I was just disappointed to learn that my reservation request for the Hotel Sapo Dorado - six months in advance! - could not be accomodated. Although Belmar is recommended on this site, I've heard that it is so-so.<BR><BR>Now I'm considering either Fonda Vela or El Establo. Can't find any reviews on El Establo, but it looks great on the web! I'm wondering, though, whether it's quite touristy....<BR><BR>I'd really appreciate *detailed* feedback on these places from anyone who's been or heard. Or if you have really strong positive feelings about some other place in Monteverde, let me know.

Oh! - I should mention: I have a strong preference for a view of the Gulf of Nicoya.

Fonda Vela is just beautiful, with an incredible view of Nicoya Peninsula. Sweeping wooden angular and glass building. Definitely classy fancy. The nicest place in town. They host a music festival in late January and February which is excellent. The owner of Fonda Vela is a violin maker, and he and his son designed and built the place. Not as costa rican as Sapo Dorado. , but Sapo Dorado does NOT have a view of the bay.

Thanks. Did you stay in a suite or standard room? Can you offer any advice on the relative advantages of each?<BR><BR>I know that not all rooms at Sapo Dorado have a view of the gulf, but the Sunset Terrace suites do. I say this not to correct you, but to clear this up for other readers.

Kelly: To further complicate this issue, our room at Fonda Vela did not have a view of the Gulf of Nicoya (although it had a beautiful view of the grounds and fountain). I agree with everything else the previous poster said about the hotel - it is a beautiful hotel, with lovely grounds and restaurant. Our room was huge - dark wood floors, beautiful furnishings and an alcove with loveseats and coffee table next to a huge picture window. It also has the added benefit of being within walking distance of Monteverde,although it's all uphill. We elected to catch a ride to the park, then walked back to the hotel. (If you walk, beware of buses. Costa Rican bus drivers do not move to avoid pedestrians!)
