lodging in Merida, Mexico
We will be staying in Merida in mid-November for 5 nights. There are SO many hotel/B&B options that I am becoming overly saturated reading all the reviews and looking at numerous web sites. Can anyone tell me, from experience, is it better to stay within walking distance of the historic center where all the action is or a bit outside the city where the hotels take on a whole different atmosphere? We prefer staying in the heart of a city... but enjoy large, airy accommodations. Is there a happy medium? Hotel Hacienda? Villa Merida? Hacienda Xcanatun? Temozon? We will appreciate any comments!

What price point? I'm staying in Merida for the 1st time in June and have read great reviews of a number of great value B&Bs in the center of town. I've booked at Las Arecas, 300/400 pesos for fan/ac ($25-31/night):

We are looking to pay a bit more. We are older and love our comfy beds and room to spread out and roomy bathrooms. But, of course, still want charm. $150/night range and will go higher if it is worth it.

We stayed at Dolores Alba last Dec which was much less expensive than your per night range but, I would definitely vote in favor or being able to walk to the historic center which we could.

We liked Casa del Balam in Merida. Historic hotel but the rooms are nice and it is right in the center of the city. http://www.casadelbalam.com/

Thanks so much. I had Casa del Balam on my favorites list and I just looked at it again. It IS quite lovely!

We stayed at the Balam a couple of years ago. Brought 80 year old in laws. We stayed in a regular though large room; they stayed in the suite with the big balcony. We all absolutely loved it and still talk about how nice it was.

The last time I was in Merida (one of my favorite places), I made a mental note to stay at the Hotel Hacienda the next time I visit. Beautiful place.

We are down to 4 places ranging in price all over the place! Villa Merida $235, Hacienda $150, del Balam $187 and Casadas de Merida $84. WOW! What a decision. I know I am totally anal but I do this with all of our stays... and it always turns out good. Thanks for all the feedback!

I hope you will report back after your trip and let me know where you stayed and how it was. I have been wanting to go to Merida for years, but somehow it always gets pushed back.Happy travels!!!

Just got back from Merida. We stayed at Hacienda Temozon for three nights and it was amazing. We had a large suite for three women, private patio, small plunge pool, huge bathroom etc. Expensive though- $350 pn including all taxes, etc. They have less expensive rooms with one King starting at about $210. Completely uncrowded, unbelievable service. If you want to treat yourself to two nights there, I'd highly recommend it. Food was good and not overpriced, I've also stayed at Casa Balum before - nice enough, comfortable but not luxurious. Merida was hot and very, very crowded. But, its a nice town with very friendly people.

Las Arecas was incredible - I had the place to myself. I'll post on trip advisor and post a full travelogue in the next few weeks. Happy trails!

We've stayed four times at Cascadas de Merida and think it's magnificent. The property is lovely - rooms are good sized - bathroom is unique and it's a joy to take a shower there and look at the private courtyard - beds are luxurious. And the breakfasts are pretty special - fruit, breads, juice, coffee and then the main course of the day. Owners have great knowledge of the area. I have only high praise for this gem of a B&B.
