Lima to Buenos Aires: Airline questions
After spending two weeks in Peru we've decided on a one week stay in Buenos Aires. We have an open-jaw ticket returning from Buenos Aires back to the US. Our questions relate to the one way flight from Lima to BA. We've done an online comarison of airlines between these two cities and the flights seem to cost about $440.
1. Does this sound reasonable or should we continue to look for a better deal?
2. Does this pricing reflect taxes for non residents? We can't tell from the website.
3. And finally, if you were traveling this route, would you take a flight that leaves at midnight and arrives around 6:30 AM or a flight that leaves at 6:00 AM and arrives at 12:30 PM (around noon)
Thanks everyone. Kathy

The price sounds about right.
Not sure about Peru, but in most South American countries there is an exit tax that is not included in the ticket. In Argentina, expect to pay $18 before your return flight.

It sounds like it will be a nice trip, Kathy. Even though I suggested in your other thread that you spend that extra week in Peru, Argentina is a wonderful place.
Peru will charge you a $28 airport tax that you pay at check-in.
As for those flight times ... You are also expected to check in three hours in advance in Lima for an international flight. Factor that into your decision about which flight to choose.

Thanks for the information drdawggy and Jeff. We realize that going across the continent is time, money and a bit of an extra hassle, but we want to experience as much as we can within reason (we wish we had a lot more time). Thanks for the heads up about the three hour advance check in time and for the departure tax amounts for both airports.
I appreciate and look forward to your help again. Kathy

I have never arrived more than two hours in advance for an international flight in SA. This time in Quito everyone was being told THREE hours. I called the airlines, and they said TWO. It was just fine.

Thank you triptaker. Since we will be spending the last few days of the Peru segment of our May trip in the city of Lima, it should be easy for us to check this out. However, we're still undecided on which flight time to take, which airline to choose, and exactly how to secure the reservation--online or through an agent. Kathy

Hi Kathy,
Flying on an international flight from Lima you NEED the three hour time window. It took us two full hours from check-in line to sitting at the gate. The lines were not particularly long, just very, very slow moving.
We were on a 2:00 AM flight Lima-Dallas on a Monday morning in February 2005.
The $28 exit tax for international flights at the Lima airport is paid in cash: US dollars or Peruvian Nuevo Soles.

Hi Sharon, We chose the 11:59PM TACA flight to BA, and we do plan to arrive at the Lima airport by 9PM -latest. We booked the flight online at the TACA site with no problem. (Wow! in BA said we'd get a much better deal if we did this ourselves, so we did)
Additionally, our Lima hotel is close to the restaurant you recommended in Miraflores-- the one on the pier. So after a final delightful dinner in Peru, we'll return to our hotel, pick up our stored luggage, and head for the airport.
I believe Jeff, above, stated the fee for the departure tax, but it's good to be reminded. And, as I'm always overly prepared, we'll no doubt be earlier than 9PM at the airport.
Thanks to all of you who have helped us with our trip planning so far. I'll probably be asking more questions as they pop up. We're really looking forward to both sections of the trip. Kathy
