Lima airport help
In looking at return flights from Lima to DC (having spent most of the trip in the Cusco area), it appears most flights leave very late at night or early morning (eg, Delta's 12:20 am flight to Atlanta). If one flies into Lima the prior morning, are there lockers at the airport or somewhere to stash luggage while touring the city during the day, returning about 10:00 pm for the 12:20 pm flight? Has anyone else encountered this scheduling issue? Thanks - Claire

Yes, there is luggage storage. It is easy to find under the escalators. It is recommended that you arrive at the airport 3 hours prior to international flights.

Janis - Thanks for the info - I'm greatly relieved. For once, 3 hours early arrival at the airport will be a good thing! Claire

This is the one and only thing I don't like about travel to and from Peru: international schedules and domestic schedules in Lima don't mesh very well, and you're often confronted with the "What to do for eight hours in Lima?" thing.
The airport is much nicer than it used to be. There are nice shops for some last-minute souvenirs and a food court, (with McDonald's even, if you're so inclined). It is still a very slow airport with a lot of check-in tasks to perform. Your luggage gets hand searched while you're in the ticket line and then beyond security, you go through another line and identity check to get to your boarding gate. You do need that three hours advance check in just to be on the safe side. The rest of the trip will be fantastic. Peru is amazing and it more than makes up for the little incoveniences you encounter when you arrive and depart. |
Jeff - Thanks for the info. I'm sure we'll stow our luggage and taxi into town to at least one museum, but give ourselves plenty of time to return to the airport and get through security. Claire

Claire,
Ditto the info about storage lockers, (we used them) and that the airport is nicer than used to be---still some construction going on, and that it's a lengthly process for checkin for flight back to US. We did hang out quite a while at the airport. One tip that we didn't put to the test, but were told, is that catching a taxi outside the baggage area for in-country flights (where you will arrive after your flight from Cusco)is less $ than if you go thru to the main ticketing area where international flights are arriving. |
Whoops. got interrupted on the above post. Anyway, is also less congestion to get a taxi outside the arrival area where you come in from Cusco. The storage lockers are near that baggage area. Anyone can direct you. You could take a taxi to a tour co. location and take a city tour. The MiraFlores area is a nice, safe area to shop & eat, but not close to the airport. Vikki
