labor day in Mexico?

My husband and I are looking for advice on a US labor day wknd (4 nite) getaway.
How would the weather be?
We would like the following:
-non-touristy area
-hiking
-near ocean
-small or medium sized town
-about 4 hr plane ride from NC (Charlotte)

You can fly nonstop from Charlotte to Belize City. Then head either to Ambergris Caye, although it's somewhat touristy, or Placencia, which is really laid back and fun. There are also great places in land, but I don't have any experience there. Jean

Jean H, re: Belize - unbearable hot and humid there in Sept?

You might get more suggestions if you left out the non-touristy requirement in your post (even if that's what you'd truly like to find). The reality is that small to medium Mexican towns with easy access from the U.S., with hiking and ocean, are most likely to have tourist appeal.

The flip side, September is not high-season for tourists in Mexico because of the hot and rainy weather many places.

I haven't been to Belize in September, but was on Ambergris Caye in June. It was certainly hot, but I like hot weather. That being said, we did use our air-conditioning in the room. Any place you decide on, I'd advise trip insurance since it's the heart of the hurricane season.
