JW Marriott Cancun or Ritz Carlton Cancun?

Would like recommendations between the two hotels. We heard that the JW Marriott does not get a lot of sun. Any truth to this? Which beach is nicer. Any additional information is appreciated.

Both are 5 star hotels, top of the line, within walking distance of each other so the beach is identical (beautiful white sand!) We have stayed at the JW and I don't understand the "not getting a lot of sun" statement.

They're on the same beach. The JW tends to be more casual, the Ritz more formal, though both are luxurious. In winter, the JW may get more shade in the afternoon because of the hotel architecture, but in summer there is more than enough sun, and you'd be thankful for shade!

They are both great hotels and their beaches are very similar. I prefer the Marriotts pool area and would stay there over the Ritz due to it being much less expensive.

We stayed at the Ritz a year ago, and visited the JW for a day and had lunch there. Both are great. The downside of the Ritz is that it's entirely in the traditional Ritz style. Inside, you would think you are in the Ritz in Boston or Washington. Four Seasons doesn't follow that model, for example, they have beautiful hotels in appropriate local style. The JW has more of an appropriate Carribean feel.

Both are very nice. If you really want a true five star hotel experience, I think the JW isn't quite there. But you probably won't notice. The JW is basically a step nicer than a Hilton or Westin, but doesn't seem to execute quite as well as the Ritz. As Ritz's go, this is one of the best around. The JW is a bit less expensive too. Factoring in cost and the benefits of having a more local feel when you're staying in the Carribean, the JW is probably a better choice.
