Just curious. Why do Brazilian soccer players go by one name?
 
Pele, Renaldo, etc. Why one name only?

Same as rock stars (cher, madonna..)It makes them feel special.

I heard something on TV about back in the day soccer was mainly for blue-collar workers. And it was looked down upon for upper-class people to play soccer so in order to not get their name in the newspaper. These guys would come up with nicknames and I guess it stuck. Correct me if I'm wrong.
