Just Back from Playa del Carmen (last week)

Had a great trip! First time over to Playa area...thoroughly enjoyed the water there as opposed to the WestCoast. Didn't do the AI this time; wanted to try the 'small boutique hotel on the beach'......and LOVED it! We stayed at the Hotel Las Palapas, and it was more than I expected. For those of you who recommended, Thank You! We Loved it...so unique.....

We are Canadian travellers; we took pesos.
We took the collectivo, instead of paying the taxi fares; cheaper.
Took ferry over to Cozumel, wasn't worth the time UNLESS you plan on renting scooters or doing something on the other side of the Island. When you get off the ferry in Cozumel, its just like store after store after store, so nothing new over Playa.

We took local bus into Tulum one day; well worth the trip, if only to see the view from atop the hill. There is a lovely secluded beach below, that you can go down and swim, but remember, there is no restaurant, washroom, etc., down there, so be prepared....but is lovely to take some pics. Take lots of water as it was hot the day we were there, and it is HOT.....and no water there.

If you have any questions, just write me.

I will be going in May, can I get from Playa to Isla Mujueras on my own by public transportation?

we ate in many restaurants; but our favorite was a small, relatively new restaurant, called COMO COMO, mediterranean fare, up around Calle 38...excellent food. we also ate at a few of the argentina restaurants. Dix....all on the main drag...and blue lobster, not bad....there are so many to chose from, basically is what kind of food do you want to eat that evening....enjoy

re isla mujueras. yes, you can get anywhere on local transport, and it is wayyyy cheaper. i wudn't take a taxi anywhere, except locally....and they just wait for you to give them money, and if you give them too much they wont say, so make sure you know what the trip is worth. ie., ifyou are on fifth avenue somewhere, to get back to your hotel should be no more than 2.50 or 3.00 us funds....

Hi,

Can you please give your impressions of Las Palapas? We've stayed there a few times, but it has been about five years since the last time. Thanks!

What was your experience of the music from Mamitas at Las Palapas? That seems to be the only negative I ever read about it. Some people say it's a big deal, others not so much. Just curious what your experience was. Where on the property did you stay? (seems like people who stay on the northern edge or close to the water don't notice the music as much)
