Jungle trip for active kids?Chiapas?

Hi: We live in the DF and want to take the kids to a 'Jungly' type place to do some hiking and exploring. [boys ages 8-12] in late Oct/early Nov during their school break. We have heard Chiapas is a good idea. Anyone else have thoughts? Thanks much-

Chiapas is wonderful. Tremendous diversity in terms of culture as well as geography and ecosystems. The ruins at Palenque are easily worth one day exploring, and you can spend at least one other visiting Bonampak and Yaxchilan (the latter is accessed via a boat trip on the river where you see crocodiles.

Loved Chiapas but haven't made it to Bonampak and Yaxchilan yet. My photos with blog and travelogue links on the main page of each collection are below in case you're interested - all my recommendations are embedded there. Happy trails!

Great jungly type place to stay near Palenque (Palenque is also the main spot from which people take day trips to Bonampak and Yaxchilan) is the Hotel Quinta Chanabnal. Junior suite has two good sized beds for a very reasonable price.

I'll add my vote to Palenque! You might consider visiting some of the nearby waterfalls, too (Misol-ha, Agua Clara, and Agua Azul). And if you want to leave the jungle for a few days, San Cristobal de las Casas would offer some nice options. Enjoy!

Hi Worldgypsy!

I agree, Palenque is awesome! And it is certainly the best choice to do with kids. You can find guides at the entrance of the site that will propose you different kind of tours (ruins or jungle). Bonampak and Yaxchilan are great, I really loved both, but I wouldn't go there with kids as the trip is *really tiring* (6am to 20pm) unless you plan sleeping in the jungle (there are great eco-friendly hotels managed by Lancadon Indian communities, so that would also be a great option).

Misol-ha, Agua Clara, and Agua Azul are nice but avoid them if it has been raining the week before you arrive because you won't enjoy the gorgeous colors of the falls.

Hopefully that helps!

It's good to ask about recent events before heading to the water features mentioned above; occasionally there have been episodes of conflict over land and income rights.

@hopefulist, land and income rights issue in this area is no longer topical. There have always been conflicts in Chiapas, but this is never against tourists but government. Anyway, @worldgypsy if you travel with local tour operators they will keep out of those areas, so don't bother!
