January-February Belize Trip
My husband & I are going to Belize from the end of Jan to beginning of Feb.
We're staying in Cayo at Chaa Creek for 4 nights, and then Ramon's Village on Abergris Caye for 6 nights.

I am worried about the dangers from the news of Guatemalans robbing, killing and one report of a raping. Has anyone been to the Cayo district recently? Were there any incidents?

Is there anyplace in the jungle that would be safer to stay in than Chaa Creek?

Are their ruins we could vist that might offer us some safety?

Also, I have read many of the emails concerning Belize, and only one mentioned Ramon's Village. Can anyone tell me wjat it's like.

Can anyone tell be if there are biting bugs in the sand in Jan./Feb?

Thanks

I did not hear this news but I can tell you that sand fleas in January are really terrible near Ramon's. I got bitten so badly that my feet were bleeding from scratching. Good luck.

I stayed at Ramon's a few years ago in February. We chose a suite (with kitchenette), with a thatched roof, and really enjoyed it. The room was very clean and charming, but no amenities like TV, etc. (a plus, in my opinion). There is a decent restaurant, attractive pool, and watersports operator on site. We wanted to be within walking distance of San Pedro so that we wouldn't need to worry about transportation.

I got a lot of mosquito bites during our visit (mostly because we kept the doors open and didn't use the AC), and got bitten a lot when we took a trip to the Mayan ruins at Altun Ha. We experienced no sand flies whatsoever ... those pesky critters are endemic throughout the Caribbean basin wherever it rains regularly, and their numbers and ferocity depend largely on recent weather. We had a very dry, breezy week, so no sand flies.

If you would like to read about my trip (and see photos), visit my personal website at www.homestead.com/islandtime/MainPage1.html, or e-mail me directly.

I spent the last few days in Cayo in the same area where the incident occurred. No other problems at all since the last deal. I had my cousin visiting who was in the WTC during the attack and she came to Belize to visit for rest and healing and would never have brought her to any area where I thought the poor kid would face more problems. Chaa Creek has security on the grounds who patrol at night. You'fre fine there. I slept next door without locks on the doors and without any worries. You'll be fine.

Katie Valk
Belize

I spent some time in San Ignacio at the end of December with no problems. I made the trip to Belize solo (as a 20 yr. old college student) and felt perfectly safe. As for the incidents to which you refer, the murder (from what I learned when I was in Belize) was of the owner of one of the lodges and was a result of his inappropriate behavior towards someone's underage daughter. Not that I'm justifying the murder in any way, I'm just saying that as a tourist you are perfectly safe in Belize.
As far as sand flies go, I spent some time on one of the islands on Glover's Reef where the flies are supposed to be horrendous but I only got a few bites and they went away after a day. The strategy for avoiding getting bitten is to shower after going in the ocean because it's the salt that attracts the bugs.
Hope this information was somewhat useful. I know you'll have an amazing time in Belize. -Liz
