Ixtapa vs. Cancun

We just returned from our second trip to Cancun a couple weeks ago. Already we are in the beginning stages of our next trip. We love Cancun, but want to try something different this time around. Our travel agent suggested Ixtapa. Can anyone advise on their similarities/differences the two have? I have to mention that we love the nightlife (except big discos) in Cancun, all the activities, beaches and cleanliness of hotel district. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

About 4 years ago, we took a group of 50 to Ixtapa and stayed at the Krystal Hotel. Bought a 7-day breakfast, 3 nite dinner pkg. at hotel. Food was GREAT
there as well as many restaurants in adjacent strip and in Zihuantenajo(sp?)
I understand that the Sheraton has now become a Barcelo-that is good as this is
an outstanding chain. DO look at the web sites for these hotels to find out about discos. Beach was beautiful but surf a bit rough. Pools at Ixtapa were terrific, grounds clean and well-kept. Shopping is ample, both nearby and
in Z. We went deep sea fishing-one of our party boated a marlin. Took a moonlight cruise on the "Fortress" and our group was their first! Delightful
and well run. Other folks went on a local tour to meet local people. Golf is
possible but alligators on course.
I highly recommend Ixtapa. All of our friends raved about it and wanted to return!! I have to think it is more
laid back than Cancun.
