Is the new aviary open yet at Peace Lodge?
 

I'm just curious how it is. I read it would be opening early this year but haven't heard anyone talking about it. I know I can e-mail them directly, but thought I'd check here first.

An aviary at Peace Lodge ?

I can understand the butterfly conservatory, snake exhibit etc but an aviary?

Peace Lodge / La Paz gardens attracts so many absolutely wonderful WILD birds [tanagers, barbets, motmots, orioles, flowerpiercers, myriad hummingbirds etc...] that having an aviary there seems somewhat like bringing 'Coals to Newcastle' as the old saying goes.

And, although I have great respect and appreciation for the conservation work done by many zoos, seeing a bird in a cage can never match the excitement and pleasure of seeing one in the wild, at least for me.

I am planning to stay at Peace Lodge for a night in June. On my reservation form, it said "please note, there is construction going on in the park." When I inquired about this, they said they were building the aviary currently. They did not say when they were planning on completing it, but I do know it is in the works. Hope that helps.

I'll be there the 1st week of May and when I asked they said it would be done by then (which, if you've seen past construction schedules in CR, may or may not mean much, lol).

We were just there (Feb 11th--sigh)--and we were told that it was opening the next week (i.e. week of the 19th). We heard the macaws in the morning that they had put into the aviary. But it was sad to think of macaws in cages after seeing them fly freely in the Osa.

In any case, if the construction on the aviary is finished, the only construction that we saw was near the trout bar, further away from the rooms.

Is it possible that the birds going into the aviary are rescues that can't make it out in the wild?

I thought the wild birds at La Paz were amazing and I too hope the aviary doesn't take away from the excitement of having a wild bird just randomly fly into your view. That is part of the fun.

All the concerns above are why I'm interested in finding out more about the project. The purpose of the aviary (do they intend to bring rescued birds, or raise and release, or...?) I don't approved of caged birds either. Will it be the size of a football field...? I guess I'll soon find out.
