Is Puerto Vallarta OK for Children?

I am looking to travel and PV is on the list, I have a 3 and 5 year old. I wish to spend a week, intend to rent a car and drive aimlessly within reason to see what we can. Hate All Inclusives. We love city, beach and rural spots.
I would like a condo or suite. Budget is about 5,000. Would fly out of NYC area.
Suggestions, of any kind, appreciated in advance.

We took our son at 5 yrs old. Had a great time walking around the city.

Took one day trip to San Francisico (think it also has another name) where there was a very rough beach, but to the north (walking distance) was an awesome cove to swim in. All the school-age kids were there after school got out. A lot of fun!!

Mexicans love children, no problem at all.
The town is filling up very rapidly, be sure to book well in advance, or you may be out of luck.

San Pancho (is the other name for the town of San Francisco)

I don't have kids but the ones I see vacationing in PV always seemed to be having a ball!

The Mexicans really pamper their children and parents with small children always find great buys in clothes for them down there..

Hola: Now in December is the "Advent" parades with many children participating. My grandchild (age 7) just returned with us. She loved PV and can't wait to go back. We took her on the Las Caletas trip--she loved it. They have clay modeling, cooking class, swimming, kyaking, great lunch at the beach. The outdoor theatre in PV central has many themes of entertainment geared for youngsters. We just saw a beautiful ballet performed by children of all ages. She also enjoyed the flea market by the river. For a condo I personally recommend Inside Vallarta Villa's, but there are many agencies on the net to choose from--what does Fodor's say??.
