For anyone hoping for Day of the Dead typical happenings, you need to check in with your specific destination, as you're asking about. I know they have been cancelled for the second year in a row in Puerto Vallarta. It has already been announced. Last year there were still the traditional private altars and graveyard family goings-on but not large group gatherings (no processions, etc.).
{Are you thinking of going to Mexico?} Peg has been to Mexico many times. She is more than well traveled. Once we were in PV at the same time and place together, so I doubt she minds me posting that. I believe she was simply being conversational with her post topic. |

Tdiddy, sounds like a great trip. While in Morelia, try to pick up some coffee at La Lucha.

If you can swing it, dinner at this place would be worthwhile; I think it's one of the finest hotels in Mexico. Suze - I don't think Baldone was questioning your statement that you had spent time with Peg in Mexico, he was referring to the original post, which I also felt sounded like Peg had never been in Mexico. I think maybe everyone should start drinking some margaritas!

Another vote for Mansion de Iturbe for anyone visiting Patzcuaro. We stayed there just before Christmas about three years ago. Absolutely, loved it and the area. Some photos of the hotel and our travels in the area on our blog @ https://accidentalnomads.com/2018/12...o-we-imagined/ In fact we wished we had stayed there or in Morelia for Christmas as we really didn’t take to Guadalajara where we ended up. As for Mexico being dangerous, when planning our trip I got some dire warnings on how dangerous it was, mostly from US based friends. However, the reality could not have been more different. We wandered around a fair portion of the country from Zacatecas down to San Cristóbal de las Casas and Oaxaca mainly by bus and felt perfectly safe everywhere. I have travelled in some pretty dodgy places in my time and Mexico would not figure anywhere near my list of most dangerous places to visit. We found the Mexican people to be amongst the friendliest we have met anywhere on our travels and not just those engaged in the tourism industry where they are paid to be friendly, but just the people we met along the way. |
Hi crellston -- Enjoyed your photos of Patzcuaro. I haven't been there myself but hope to some day. I liked your subtitle as well, "THE MEXICO WE IMAGINED." I felt the same way the first time I visited Oaxaca, twenty years ago.
As to danger, I haven't been back to Mexico (Mexico City and a return to Oaxaca) since 2019. At that time I felt quite safe. |
Hey Crellston - Great to hear from you again. We were in Morelia for Christmas 2019 it was very nice. Stayed right in the Centro across from the Catedral. This will be our first visit to Patzcuaro and at this point Dias de la Muertos is still going on. Not sure how it will compare to past years but should be fun. Have you been traveling? I haven't been on Fodors much in the last year (2020). We took up camping again in the States but looking forward to traveling more in 2022.

I will be brief this time! You will love Patzcuaro! I can only imagine teh fun over the day of the dead celebrations! no, we have put been travelling much since returning from South Africa and Japan at the start of the pandemic. We have been House and pet sitting in the U.K. virtually of the time. Our lockdown effectively precluded travel anywhere. Much of our time has been spent in London looking after the house and dogs of an American family who spend quite a lot of the year in the US. It has become a regular thing and works well for both parties. travel plans are mainly centred on visting family in Australia but probably not until this time next year. Will likely incorporate a stopover in Japan or South Korea en route. Only other trip is for our 25th wedding anniversary. Can decide on that as I seem to have lost my travel planning mojo. Maybe a US road trip, maybe a city break in the US or Europe- if anyone has some brilliant suggestions, I would love to hear them 🙇🏼♂️ |

That happens to me too. In fact, on my above long post with links, I went away from Fodor's (but didn't close the tab), came back and everything was gone, grrr. Then I saw in the light gray bar below where my post should have been, it said "restore auto-saved content". I clicked on it and it all came back. |
